Conjunctions in the landscape (2007 Falmouth MA show)

Footpath signs, stiles, gates, bridges....
Punctuations in my journeys
Punctum* of the landscape
They fascinate me
They are the dots I use to join memories of the places I have been
And within them are marks of time
traces of the past
of nails hammered and feet trodden
the now as we move over, around, past them
and the future as they influence the routes we are to take.

I have formed my own memorials
to punctuations in the landscapes I have come to know over the last few months
and those I have known at different points in my life.

A temporal re/experiencing of these sites.
Captured fragments of the routes of my experiences.
They are my own conjunctions in the landscapes I have known.

*Punctum as defined by Roland Barthes in Camera Lucida (1980) to describe that element of a photo which
'rises from the scene, shoots out of it like an arrow, and pierces me.'
